Hotter Than a Blister Bug
in a Pepper Patch

Summer's here in full force. This month: why time in the water is good for you, what we're reading in our Wild Wisdom Reads group, and how to help Be Well Circle.

To say it's a hot one this year is an understatement. My tomatoes are already nearly at their peak, and I'd bet you've noticed the heat in your own garden too. I always feel grateful to live near the ocean to cool off, and this season that's true more than ever.

Time at the beach is a great way to exercise, to be out in nature even in these temperatures, and to cool off. Go earlier or later in the day to avoid the peak of heat, and of course bring shade and plenty of water anytime you go. This Sunday morning I plan to go kayaking and then get in a good swim, all well before noon.

I grew up in New York, close to lakes and not too far from the ocean. They were chilly and refreshing in summer, and in childhood I perpetually looked forward to the season and to days where swimming, water skiing, or jumping off a dock or boat might be part of the activities. It isn't just about the fun or the cooling off, though both of those are great parts of being in water. It's also so deeply healing.

Time in any body of water feels like a purifier, a reset, and an energizer.

I typically get a great night's sleep after any time spent by the ocean, and I feel revived the next day. There's a reason time by the sea has long been a remedy for what ails you. What a blessing to be surrounded by it here in Charleston.

I also love to head up to the mountains for a long weekend that includes tubing down the Oconaluftee River, one of the most beautiful things I've experienced. Right now we're reading Is a River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane in our Wild Wisdom Reads group, and it's been truly inspirational. It's amazing how integral rivers have been to humans over time, spiritually, culturally, and for survival. Feel free to reach out to join us.

Stay cool, refreshed, hydrated, and inspired. We look forward to seeing you soon at Remedy.
